Local Youth Win Big

It is more than just the prize, to local Pass area youth, it is the self confidence to enter in the first place and the pride for a job well done.

and the winners are ...

Local art contest winners declared at the 4th annual Art Hop. Youths from the Pass area entered the contest both before and at the Art Hop, held by the Youth Arts Council (YAC) of the Banning Cultural Alliance. At the conclusion of the event’s festivities, Banning Police Officers, Detective Bob Fischer, Lieutenant Bill Caldwell and city employee, Duane Burke acted as the judges for the completion. By unanimously decision they selected Jessie Williams, age 12 and Krystal Candelerio, age 9, as the first place winners for their divisions. Each of the up and coming artists received an 82 piece art set in a wooded box complete with paints, brushes, colored pencils, pastels and more, courtesy of Renaissance Pet Resort, in Banning. In addition they each received a professional pencil set and watercolor art pad, from YAC. "I am so proud of her," said John Williams by phone after the event about his daughter Jessie. Mother Crystal Williams said that they encouraged her to enter, even though she had just recently started drawing. It was the surprised look of the budding artist herself who questioned, "Me, I won?" She then exclaimed, "I don't believe it," as she looked at her mother and was then congratulated by the judges. Officer Caldwell surprised me as he knows a bit about Anime," said Cindy Watson the youth arts director for YAC, "he pointed out his choice for winners based in part for their elongated eyes, an intrical part of an Anime’s features." The winning artwork will be on display at the Events and Youth Arts Building 109 W. Hays St. Banning.
